COSP Study Sites: Maine
Maine
The partners in the Maine study site include researchers from the
Muskie School, University of Southern Maine, who will conduct the study, the
consumer-operated service provider (The Portland Coalition of the Psychiatric
Labeled) and two traditional service providers (Catholic Charities Maine Support
& Recovery Services and Shalom House, Inc.) who provide community
support/case management services.
The major goal is to evaluate the effectiveness and cost of traditional services
(TS) plus consumer-operated service (COS), to describe services from both
consumer and provider perspectives, including impact of the project on the
services, and further collaboration among consumer providers, traditional
providers, and researchers.
The Portland coalition runs a drop-in center and provides a comfortable place to
"hang out", opportunities and supplies for arts and crafts, newspapers
and videos, peer support, and crisis assistance services. During the project,
services will be enhanced by increasing staff coverage, remaining open on
Saturday, enhancing transportation, increased consumer written and educational
library materials, increased computer access, and expanding outreach. The
traditional services provide community support/case management services,
resulting in coordination and continuity of care.
