"FLiCA" is two
drop-in centers, both in operation since 1992. The PEER Center in Florida is the
contract agency, with MHCAN in California as the subcontract. The principal
investigator and project director are themselves consumers, with 2 alternating
consumer representatives, Research is guided by experts from the Florida Mental
Health Institute and Florid International University.
The PEER Center in Fort Lauderdale is one of the largest consumer-operated
programs in the nation, with over 2000 members, snacks bus passes, and a pool
hall. Other programs are crisis services and a thrift shop. A housing program, with
case manager, helps people find an apartment and furniture. A full-scale printing
operation, with job coach, includes sheltered employment. A computer lab
refurbishes computers and sells them to consumers at a low cost. The PEER Center
partners with Henderson Mental Health Center.
The Mental Health Client Action Network, in Santa Cruz , open 6 days a week,
provides material resources and peer support, along with van transportation,
poetry, art, guitar classes and support groups. The computer lab offers tutoring
in math, Internet use, and work processing. MHCAN partners with Santa Cruz
County Mental Health Services.
