Connecticut
This site represents a partnership endeavor between Advocacy Unlimited (AU), the
Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction
Services, and the University of Connecticut. AU is a consumer-owned and operated
statewide program designed to prepare individuals with psychiatric disabilities
to be advocates. The focus of the education is on self, systems, and legislative
advocacy. AU's advocacy education included 14 classroom sessions, ongoing
support in the community, and post-graduation education.
AU initially began in 1994, under the umbrella of the Connecticut Legal Rights
Project. In 1998, the program was incorporated as Advocacy Unlimited, Inc., a
private non-profit agency. AU focuses on abilities rather than disabilities and
strives to facilitate wellness and stability. AU works collaboratively with
clubhouses and drop-in centers, maintaining a web-site at http://www.mindlink.org.
The study site, which will involve 160 participants, is administered through the
Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services via a partnership
with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine inNew York.
