Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnsen, Ph.D. (A.B. Dartmouth College, 1975; Ph.D. North Carolina State University, 1993; NIMH Post Doctoral Fellowship, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, 1992-1994) is Associate Professor of Psychiatry.  A sociologist with experience in both mental health services and disability research, he has been involved with the evaluation of several national demonstration programs evaluating service system integration for homeless persons with serious mental illness, managed behavioral health care, and the effectiveness of consumer-operated service programs. 

He is currently Co-Principal Investigator of the COSP Multisite Research Program, and is responsible for overseeing multisite analysis issues, serving as co-chair of the Research Subcommittee, the Common Ingredients Subcommittee, the Baseline Analysis Workgroup, and moderating the Cost Subcommittee.

He is also currently research director of the Clubhouse Research Program at UMMS.  As research director of the Clubhouse Research Program, Dr. Johnsen is responsible for developing an international research agenda, and coordinating research related to the efficacy of the clubhouse model.

Additional interests include employment discrimination, rural mental health, developmental disabilities, and jail/mental health programs.  He served as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts ARC and the ARC/North Carolina.  He has served as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on research grants received from National Institute on Mental Illness, Center for Mental Health Services, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and from the states of North Carolina and Maryland.
