Core Competencies of Providers of
Consumer Operated Services

Through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency, the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania is supporting a consumer panel to investigate core competencies of providers of consumer-operated services. The Program in Consumer Studies and Training has compiled an extensive annotated bibliography on peer-run programs, produced a review of consumer-operated services literature, identified exemplary models of peer-run services, and prioritized and grouped core competencies of peer providers using a focus group technology called concept-mapping (http://www.conceptsystem.com) in collaboration with fifteen consumer participants. Core competencies of traditional mental health service providers were also identified by consumer stakeholders.
